Talkpoint Powers Enterprise Communications with Webcasting Solutions

It's been more than a decade since the Victoria’s Secret online fashion show became the first major webcast event with a record-breaking 1.5 million visitors worldwide. In 1999, an event of that proportion could not scale to support the audience size and necessary bandwidth requirements to provide a quality viewing experience on such a large scale. Nick Balletta, CEO of TalkPoint Communications remembers that webcast, and says that back then webcasting was more of a novelty with a poor end user experience. But today, webcasting for enterprise communications may finally be reaching a tipping point.

At Streaming Media East 2010, I spoke with Balletta about how his company powers enterprise communications with its webcasting and virtual meeting platform. New York-based TalkPoint Communications has been around since before 2000, and provides a browser-based Software as Services model (SaaS) for online meeting and presentations. The company is very active in the enterprise space with a global base of Fortune 1000 customers in the health care, pharmaceutical, life sciences, financial, technology and publishing markets. The original company was founded in 1997 as a joint project of Dow Jones Interactive and Microsoft desktop video and was previously known as NextVenue and later iBEAM. In 2001, iBeam launched TalkPoint as a web-based, self-publishing presentation product, the company later went private under the name TalkPoint.

Balletta says that Talkpoint's clients are most interested in using their large-scale global webcasting services, which incorporate audio, video, slides, and other interactive elements. These virtual events can be delivered as either an audio or video webcast, or webinar events for internal and external communications. Security and interactivity are important for Talkpoint customers, which Balletta maintains is Talkpoint's sweet spot.

Balletta summed up the value of webcasting for enterprise communications:
"We see webcasting more as a business tool, it's a workflow tool. Years ago it was something nice to do, now it's become a critical part of people's businesses – and now it's either driving revenues, supporting their brand, communicating with their different constituencies, whether they be shareholders, clients, employees – so it's clearly a business tool that's here to stay. We also see a trend to much more adoption of video – both at making it easier to view and easier to present. So we think video is something that's clearly going to be here for a long time."
See Balletta's related blog post: Is Corporate Use of Internet Broadcasting Approaching the Tipping Point? | TalkPoint Blog

Also, see The Webinar Blog: Web Conferencing Kicks Ash, for examples of how two Talkpoint customers used webcasting to reach stranded travelers.

Join us Tomorrow for Free Video Encoding Webinar, May 5th at 11 AM PST

Please join us tomorrow for a free Reel SEO webinar on May 5th at11AM Pacific Time to learn about online video encoding for the web. If you're a producer wondering what you need to know about video compression, then this is the webinar for you. You will have a chance to ask questions about the various video formats, codecs, bit rates, containers, formats and more. You get tips on best encoding practices so your online videos look the best that they can. You'll hear about H.264 and watch how to simply and easily apply high quality H.264 encoding to your video.

Our webinar moderator and host Mark Robertson just posted a similar reminder on Reel SEO and had this to say:
"You’ve likely been reading all the hype about Apple vs. Flash. With that hype, it appears that there is a good deal of confusion out there when it comes to video codecs, video formats, platforms, etc…. And, even though it is my belief that leading blogs shouldn’t write about things they don't understand, I completely understand the confusion (read my post -Video File Container Formats, Compression & Codecs – Oh My!)"

encoding register Encoding Video for the Web Free ReelSEO Webinar, May 5th Register for this FREE webinar

Mark is spot on when he says that there is a great deal of confusion about codecs and formats. With all the Steve Jobs Flash bashing and talk of Google open sourcing VP8 for HTML5 video (one of the codecs it acquired from its purchase of video compression company On2) along with Microsoft getting behind H.264 and not open source video codec Theora – it's no wonder that people get all misconstrued. The news has been filled with posturing on all sides of the issue when it comes to a "standard" for web and mobile video. Dan Rayburn has been taking a lot of heat from his blog posts on the subject from rabid Apple fans who have threatened him with bodily harm, but his most recent post, H.264 Is A Codec, Flash Is A Platform: One Can't Kill Off The Other, really cuts through the misconceptions surrounding the area of video encoding.

I hope you'll join us tomorrow for this FREE webinar which will focus on some fundamental knowledge about video encoding, file containers, formats and profiles – and strategies for producing better web videos.

Our topics include:
  • What is video compression?
  • What is bit rate?
  • Video codecs vs. container formats
  • Shooting tips for web video
  • Tools and resources for encoding
  • How to create high quality H.264 encoding settings

Tutorial: Encoded in 15 Minutes

Robert Reinhardt, creator of videoRx.com, will show you how you can use the best H.264 compression tool, x264, to produce high quality web and device-ready video, all without spending money on commercial encoding products. All you need is a tool that leverage x264 and some elbow grease. In this webinar, Robert will demonstrate x264 with the popular cross-platform open-source tool Handbrake and go under the hood with x264Encoder, a free plug-in for the Mac version of QuickTime Player Pro.

Upcoming Klessblog Sightings - Webinars, Meetups, Streaming Media East, Oh My!

It's been an extremely busy year so far in the online video industry and in my own personal and professional life. I admit that I haven't been able to keep as current on this blog with news and information, and to that extent, I've been focusing my energy on other areas, including: webinars, meetups, and travel to new places. I recently attended the Streamy Awards in Los Angeles and ended up in the front row of the now infamous award show. I saw a lot of familiar faces, met many great new friends and shared some of those highlights in the last several posts. I have a lot more video that I may post to my YouTube channel, but for now, I wanted to share a few upcoming events over the next several weeks where you can catch me in the wild, so to speak.

Encoding Video for the Web – Free ReelSEO Webinar, May 5thYou can catch me next week on the Encoding Video For The Web: Free Webinar on May 5th, which is produced by Reel SEO and sponsored by vzaar. I'll be joined by Robert Reinhardt, creator of the online video service videoRx.com, VP of the multimedia consulting company [the MAKERS) and noted author of a number of Wiley and Adobe Press books, including Video with Adobe Flash CS4 Professional StudioTechniques. See this related post of Robert's Flash Encoding Resources: Bit Rate Calculator and Optimal Aspect Ratios. Also, joining the webinar as moderator is my good friend and 2010 Streaming Media All-Star, Mark Robertson, Reel SEO Founder and Publisher. If you're a producer wondering what you need to know about video compression, then this is the webinar for you. You will have a chance to ask questions about the various video formats, codecs, bit-rates and more. You get tips on best encoding practices so your online videos look the best that they can. You'll hear what the pros have to say about H.264 and watch how to simply and easily apply high quality H.264encoding to your video. Register for this FREE webinar here!

After that, my next big trip is to New York City in two weeks for Streaming Media East on May 11-12th, where I'll be moderating a panel discussion on Video Publishing Platforms. For that session, I'll be joined by Bismarck C Lepe, President, Products at Ooyala, Ron Yekutiel, Chairman and CEO of Kaltura, Daniel Webster, SVP of Media at Synaptic Digital and Jason Liebman, CEO and Co-Founder of Howcast. A number of vendors offer video publishing platforms, the features and functionality-not to mention cost-vary widely. Some vendors focus their solutions on content management and monetization, while others are geared towards enabling syndication and interactive advertising campaigns. Adding to the confusion is the fact that different platform vendors have different metrics for billing, and costs rise as content owners become more successful.

This session builds on the program that Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen and I put together for the Online Video Platform Summit and will lay the groundwork for content owners to better understand what type of publishing platform they need and what they should expect to pay for managing content.

Following Streaming Media East, on May 14th, I'll be a featured speaker on a Ragan Communications webinar on How to produce Flip videos that inform, engage and entertain your employees. I'll be wearing my day job hat for this session discussing how at Kaiser Permanente, our employees are using Flip cameras to capture important employee news to post on the company's intranet. This 60-minute webinar will offer practical tips on how to use your Flip, Kodak or other pocket camera—and find out what kind of stories are best told with this camera. This session is not a free webinar and you can find out more about it and register here.

I'll be joined by my colleague Elizabeth Schainbaum, Staff Writer, Corporate Communications, who was handed a Flip camera and found herself learning how to do photo essays and video on the job. Instead of writing an article about a group of employees that were conducting a critical events trauma training at our Health Care Innovation Center, Elizabeth produced a video instead. Since that first piece on the trauma center, she has worked on two other videos.

Some of the topics we'll be covering are:

Shooting tips:
  • How to frame an interview to give your speaker enough head room
  • When to use a tripod and why you should avoid zooming
  • How to select the best background for your interview
  • Tricks to make sure your video is always sharp and in focus
Lighting:
  • What kind of lighting conditions you need for good picture quality
  • How to avoid producing grainy video
  • Ways to light your subject, without buying expensive equipment
Audio:
  • How to avoid distracting background noise
  • Why you need to stay close to your interview subject
  • When to use an external microphone
Editing:
  • Why shorter is always better
  • Types of free software you can use to create your video vignettes—and optional equipment you can buy if you want to kick it up a notch
  • A step-by-step process to edit your Flip video, including transferring the video, creating a timeline and uploading it to your intranet or YouTube
How to produce stellar employee videos:
  • What types of stories are best told with a Flip camera
  • How to produce videos that your audience will want to watch—over and over again
  • Why clips produced on a Flip can be more engaging that polished, professional videos

Finally, I'll be a guest speaker on May 18th at the Eastbay LocalPreneurs Meetup Group giving a presentation on how to Quickly and Easily Master Online Video Promotions and Watch Your Sales Skyrocket. Meetup is the world's largest network of local groups. More than 2,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities. Online Video Platforms Roundtable with Delve Networks, Kaltura, Kyte and Ooyala, Streaming Media Webinar on March 11, 2010

It was almost a year ago that Streaming Media magazine and StreamingMedia.com hosted their first Online Video Platform Roundtable, and since then the number online video platform providers have grown, along with the exponential growth of online video ecosysem. Over the last few years, online video platforms have evolved to provide a wide array of capabilities for businesses as an outsourced video solution for content management, encoding, advertising, syndication and monetization. According to the The Forrester Wave™: US Online Video Platforms, Q4 2009, an evaluation of six leading online video platform vendors, "71% of the US online audience watches video on the Internet, and the number of streams consumed should more than double by 2013", so whether you're a large media publisher or a small retailer, every organization needs a video strategy and online video platforms power video for an organization.

For many businesses, launching an online video portal can be challenging when you don't know what you need to power your video. You may have existing assets and infrastructure, databases, tracking methods, proprietary builds, or you may be starting from scratch. Most companies don't have in-house creative or technical teams, and are faced with the question of build vs. buy vs. free online video solutions. The Online Video Platform Summit addressed many of the needs of the growing population of video publishers looking for solutions to publish their online video content. It's interesting to note that three of the four presenters on this webinar, Alex Castro, Bismarck Lepe and Ron Yekutiel, were also speakers on our opening Online Video Platform Summit session, Defining Online Video Platforms, which was also moderated by Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen. Additionally, all four companies on this webinar presented their platforms as part of the two Online Video Platform Showcases.

Last month, I covered the Online Video Platform Summit in depth with a series of posts that included videos from each session and related commentary. I listed links to those posts below the announcement for this upcoming free webinar, which is an event you'll not want to miss.

Most importantly, they'll take attendee questions so you can get the answers you need to make the right purchasing and deployment decisions.
