Seawell Announces $7 Million in Series A Funding, for "Next Generation" H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC)

I had an opportunity to speak with Seawell Networks CEO Brian Collie the other day about how his company is coming out of stealth mode and ready to make a splash in the online video market – starting today with their first public announcement of a $7 million Series A round of investment, including the conversion of seed funding. The Toronto, Canada-based software company was founded in 2008 and provides Internet video delivery products for content producers and their content delivery partner organizations. SeaWell leverages video compression standard, H.264 scalable video coding (SVC), which they see as the next generation of video streaming.

H.264 SVC is standards‐based technology that enables adaptive distribution of multiple streams to a range of target platforms with much greater efficiency and granularity. Instead of producing separate streams, the SVC encoder converts the source into layers in an "encode once serve many" model. The SVC stream is comprised of Base, Clarity and Size layers and each layer adds information to the lower layers, rather than just duplicating information into multiple bit rates. This allows multiple bit rates to be derived from a single file with a little headroom of only 10 to 20% larger than the highest bit rate required, and up to 1024 unique layers are allowed within the standard.

H.264 SVC been applied to the videoconferencing and surveillance industries and as Brian Collie noted, his company saw it as a perfect fit for dealing with the issues of video delivery to multiple platforms. Seawell has a 5-page white paper, "The Next Generation of Adaptive Streaming on H.264 SVC" on the benefits of H.264 SVC which you can request here.

Brian Collie is a self-described serial entrepreneur with previous successful startups, and he believes that his company's technology is a game-changing innovation. While he couldn't name any names due to Non-Disclosure Agreements, he said that they are working with some of the biggest content producers in North America, and CDNs and Telcos are also looking at the technology. Those announcements will be made later in the year, not necessarily as endorsements for Seawell, as Collie noted, but as endorsements for this new way of thinking about what they call "next generation adaptive streaming."

Since Seawell is not an online video platform or CDN, they are not trying to compete within the space – and while Collie says he's not naive to think that they will be the only one in the space – to his knowledge they are the first to pioneer this technology for optimizing and delivering Internet-ready video content with TV-like viewing experiences across platforms.

Online video veteran Andy Beach, author of Real World Video Compression, has joined Seawell as Chief Evangelist and Kris Alexander from Akamai and Richard Mavrogeanes founder of VBrick Systems, Inc. have both joined Seawell's advisory team. The company has some great momentum, according to Collie, who says that we're seeing just the tip of the iceberg right now in adaptive streaming and that typically ever two or three years there is a breakthrough. He predicted that many of the players within the video space that have adopted H.264 AVC will embrace H.264 SVC for its scalable platform.

Seawell's funding was led by BDC Venture Capital, the round also included Northwater Intellectual Property Fund and Ontario Centres of Excellence. SeaWell will use the funds to expand business development and marketing efforts. Seawell will be making more announcements in the coming months and will be demonstrating their technology at the NAB show next month and at Streaming Media East in May.

Online Video Gets Serious in 2010, and it's only the Beginning

With almost two months into 2010, the daily news feeds have been filled with updates on the online video space. From funding announcements, M&As, new product and service rollouts, broad market expansion, rapid innovation, and consolidation within the space — it's an industry that is maturing into a serious business, as both the consumption and production of video on the web transitions to mobile devices and broadband-enabled televisions. According to comScore, over a billion videos were consumed daily in December for whopping 33 billion views in the US, and there's no sign of it slowing down. Leading online video platform providers have expanded into new markets, and enhanced their cloud-based video SaaS offerings for delivery to all consumer electronics devices.

But with all the push, there's also been pull and with any market — startups rise and fall, and supply and demand dictate the terms of who survives in the changing environment. Advertisers are still not convinced that online video is the holy grail, and according to eMarketer, companies have yet to convert their spend of about $70 billion they're currently spending on TV advertising to online advertising.

More signs of compression within the space were seen last week, when we saw the first online video platform literally put itself on the auction block, with SesameVault selling itself on eBay (item 160405185640) with a starting bid of $500,000, with no takers so far. In addition, Ryan Lawler reported on the fall of Move Networks as Fox dropped Move Networks for Brightcove, Adobe Flash, and Dan Rayburn covered the news that Swarmcast laid off half of company, and changed focus to target CE devices.

On funding trends, Will Richmond has been tracking the money flowing into online video companies and he called February "a red-hot month" for online video financing. He noted financing rounds just in the last week for Clicker ($11M), YuMe ($25M), TidalTV ($16M) and Vook ($2.5M), adding to those previously announced: Encoding.com ($1.25M), IVT ($5.5M), Voddler ($3.5M), BrightRoll ($10M) and the big whopper of the month Ustream ($75M) though in two tranches. In 2009, he tracked 64 companies which raised close to $470 million, and so far in 2010, the total funding is just short of $150M.

The momentum is building for paid video content models and battles lines are drawn between HTML5, Flash, Silverlight and H.264, and as Brightcove CEO Jeremy Allaire said, the future of web content and mobile apps is really about the Internet’s dominant platform companies — Apple, Adobe, Google and Microsoft — trying to push their value proposition for broader adoption, and we've only seen the beginning.

Before the year marches on any further, here are some highlights of significant online video news stories so far in 2010.

Ooyala Raises $10 Million to Fastrack Global Expansion

Ooyala has closed a $10 million series C funding round and will be investing heavily to grow the company fast globally. Current investors, including Sierra Ventures, participated in the round. New investor, Rembrandt Venture Partners, led the funding investment, and Sik Rhee, General Partner at Rembrandt, will be joining the Ooyala Board of Directors. Since Ooyala launched in April 2007, the company has raised $20 million.

I spoke with Bismarck this past summer and he told me that his company has seen tremendous growth internationally with 50% of their new monthly recurring revenue coming from international markets. Ooyala currently has over 500 customers in over 20 different countries sees great opportunity in international growth markets for new customers as Bismarck pointed out:
"We've gone through the top Quantcast one million sites and we've looked at kind of where the industry is headed and we look at our business and we think we can have up to 300,000 customers today. Like the current market for online video platforms is somewhere in the neighborhood of 300,000 customers. These aren't the self-serve free YouTube customers these are people who are willing to pay for platforms."
As part of their international marketing plans Jay Fulcher, Ooyala CEO and Sean Knapp, Co-founder & CTO are currently at Streaming Media Europe, in London, this week presenting on two sessions about Online Video Publishing Platforms and Will the Cloud Rain on the CDNs' Parade? They'll also be interviewing sales and marketing candidates for key roles in both the UK, mainland Europe and Asia.

In a saturated online video platform market that seems to change daily, Ooyala differentiates itself as "the intelligent video platform" in comprehensiveness, by providing a single, end-to-end platform with an integrated, intuitive interface with viewer insight and advanced monetization tools. Ooyala reaches over 50 million unique users a month via their player from their 500 media and non-media customers globally. With the new funding Ooyala will be focused on aggressively growing the company both in the US and internationally. In 2010, their focus will be product development on new ways for content owners to monetize their content.

As far a biggest competitors, Ooyala says that most often they compete against the over 10,000 homegrown implementations of video that are in the top 100,000 Quantcast sites. Outside of that, they believe that Brightcove is next closest competitor.

In light of the recent acquisition of The Feedroom by KIT Digital and other online video platforms rebranding and refocusing their business models, Ooyala had this to say about the outlook for 2010:
"For 2010, many of the small providers like Delve Networks, Episodic.com, Twistage will fall by the way-side. Companies that already have some level of success but not very much technology, like Fliqz and Multicast, will be consolidated into a company that primarily provides professional services. Depending on what Brightcove’s investors plan to do, they may also be taken out in the next 6-12 months."
Prior to their funding news release, Ooyala also announced today that it has released native support of closed captioning. See their blog post and customer example here.

TubeMogul Looks to Grow and Standardize its Online Video Analytics with $3 Million in Series A Funding from Trinity Ventures

TubeMogul, online video's most popular distribution and analytics service, announced last week it has received $3 million in Series A funding from Trinity Ventures. "We invested in TubeMogul because we saw the potential of a viable business model, a solid product with a growing customer base at this early phase. However, it is my relationship with the executive team that that reminds me why I love what I do, helping passionate entrepreneurs fundamentally change an industry,” said General Partner from Trinity Ventures Ajay Chopra, who will join TubeMogul’s board. "TubeMogul has the team, vision and product to drive a fundamental change in the way online video is monetized.”

The funding will be used to fast-forward growth of TubeMogul's video distribution platform and accelerate standardization of its online video analytics. With over 75,000 users and hundreds of millions of streams tracked, TubeMogul solidifies its position at the nexus of online video.

Last week at the Future of Television conference Tim Street got an on camera interview with Brett Wilson, TubeMogul CEO and co-founder about the investment and some new features coming down the pike.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with a world-class venture firm like Trinity Ventures whose reputation as a value added partner is well known among entrepreneurs,.” Brett said, "To have Ajay on our board who was also a successful entrepreneur and passionate about winning this is space is invaluable."

With TubeMogul, users upload videos once and TubeMogul deploys them to as many of the top video sharing sites the producer chooses. TubeMogul's integrated analytics then provide a single source of metrics on where, when, and how often the videos are viewed. TubeMogul's free beta service has been live since November of 2006. In January 2008, TubeMogul announced the launch of its Premium Products, which include a host of new professional features.

Through its acquisition of Illumenix in October 2008, TubeMogul is also able to offer rich engagement and performance metrics through InPlay, its Flash-based analytics service. Integrating within minutes with any Flash video player, InPlay tracks audience statistics and user interaction in real time. TubeMogul also offers a marketplace to connect online video producers and advertisers and a promotion service for new viral campaigns, video ads or web series.

TubeMogul is on track to be cash-flow positive by the fourth quarter of 2009. "Since the company’s founding, TubeMogul has hit every single one of its revenue targets, and this one should be no different," said Dave Toth, co-founder of NetRatings and a TubeMogul board member and early investor. Other early investors include Knight's Bridge Capital Partners.

I recently visited the TubeMogul headquarters in Emeryville, California and met with Brett and the TubeMogul team. I had a great conversation with Mark Rotblat, VP of Business Development about online video distribution, analytics, TubeMogul’s InPlay technology and more. Look for that video later in the week.

Congratulations to Brett, John, Mark, David, Eugene and everyone at TubeMogul!

Weekly Review: Links from 2/15/09 - 2/20/09

The big news this past week included another misstep by Facebook with its Terms of Service, Hulu flexing its online video muscle forcing showdowns with TV.com and Boxee. There was more bad news about the economy yet Twitter got $35 million and innovative online video ventures still find funding like Tremor Media with $18 million, OVGuide with $5 million and online video up 24.3% to 41.6 billion views in 2008.

Here's another collection of that news and more in this installment of the weekly review.

Fred Makes it to Nickelodeon | Tilzy.TV

Fred is the most subscribed-to channel in YouTube’s history; he tops Tubemogul’s Top 50 with over 188 MILLION views. Last month alone, his shtick saw around 19 million sets of eyeballs. Inanity has reached a pitch not known before: last night, Fred took the stage on Nickelodeon’s iCarly. The move highlights Nickelodeon’s recognition that cross-pollination in similarly annoying videos can’t hurt.

  • Does Apple Have A Blind Spot About Flash? (AAPL, ADBE) - I think the news that Flash is coming to smartphones over the next year is a big deal. Most of the rich media experiences I have on the web are in Flash. YouTube's success had a lot to do with its choice of Flash for its video player. Now almost every video site on the web uses a Flash video player. The same is true of audio. It used to be that when you wanted to listen to streaming audio, you had to use Windows Media Player, the Real player, or a link to iTunes. But all that's gone, thanks again to Flash. Whether it'sLast.fm, Pandora, most radio station Web streams, or hypemachine, you are listening via Flash..

  • DVD Doomsday in Hollywood (TWX, DIS) - Movie moguls and studio bosses are starting to really worry aboutfalling DVD revenues, even if they are publicly blaming the slowing growth on the overall economic blues. On TheWrap, Nicole Laporte says that the film industry is starting to feel the tremors of a seismic shift in the business, and the worries extend even to labor issues with SAG, whose members will be looking for a bigger slice of web revenues if DVD loot slows

A Billion Internet Users, and Counting - eMarketer (Growing and growing and growing and...) The moment when the Internet passed 1 million users is veiled in history. The truth is, whenever it happened, no one was counting—or even had the means to do so. But according to the “Internet Growth Survey” from MIT, there were 1 million hosts (defined as either a computer or IP address) in 1995. At the time, it was estimated that the Internet was doubling in size every year, so there would be over 1 billion users in 2005. That timeline proved overly optimistic. But according to the comScore World Metrix audience measurement service, the Internet surpassed 1 billion visitors in December 2008.

“Surpassing 1 billion global users is a significant landmark in the history of the Internet,” said Magid Abraham, comScore CEO, in a statement. “It is a monument to the increasingly unified global community in which we live and reminds us that the world truly is becoming more flat.”

Netflix CEO alludes to streaming-only pricing by next year - Engadget HD
Considering that we've already heard whispers of price premiums for streaming content, we suppose rumors of a dedicated streaming tier aren't that far fetched. In a recent report from Bloomberg, Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings was quoted as saying that by 2010 (that's next year, y'all), consumers may be able to opt for a streaming-only package that would provide access to Watch Instantly content alone. Reed realizes that in order to maintain its current level of success, it has to "nail" the streaming aspect. No doubt, we certainly envision the streaming portion becoming more popular in the coming years, particularly if it can strong-arm studios into providing new releases for download. Sadly, he didn't talk pricing, but Netflix never has been one to gouge its subscribers, and we get the feeling it wouldn't just start on a whim in 2010. [Via Yahoo! Tech]

Weekly Review: NY Times Goes HD with Brightcove, Blip.TV and Other Funding Updates, Hulu, CBS, Ooyala, iPhone, G1 Google Phone, Netflix, Qik

Here's another weekly review of some of the significant online video events from this past week. While I don't intend this to be an ongoing feature on this blog and I do think that these stories are of interest. I've only listed a few links to some of the sources to save time and energy. While there was a lot of news of layoffs at companies big and small I didn't cover any of that here.

Beet.TV has a two-part post on the New York Times story below which you see here and here.
