Online Video Platform Summit Full Program with Speaker Line Up Now Online

Solutions and Strategies for Publishing Your Video on the Web
In less than a month, Streaming Media West and the Online Video Platform Summit will invade Los Angeles for the first time as the conference moves from the Silicon Valley to the City of Angels. The events will be held on November 2 - 3, 2010 at Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. For the second year in a row, I'm excited to announce that the full program of the Online Video Platform Summit is now online and all the speaking slots for each session have been filled. I've been working with Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen as Co-chair of the event, and we've worked hard to bring in new voices into the line up of industry leaders, digital media executives, entrepreneurs, experts and innovators in the field of online video.

In particular, our opening session on "How to Choose and Online Video Platform" is a panel discussion made up of all end users who will discuss the features and functionality they looked for when choosing an online video platform, and how the one they chose best fit their needs. We also have a great session on "Delivering Video to Mobile Devices" which Troy Dreier provided a preview of last week on OnlineVideo.net. As we did last year, we'll be showcasing a number of the platform providers again to learn about their features and capabilities. Keynotes from Streaming Media West will be featured along with another exclusive keynote by Jeremy Allaire, Chairman and CEO of Brightcove.

The Online Video Platform Summit is designed to help organizations of all types, whether you're a small business looking to publish content for the first time, an independent entertainment content creator, large media organization, or anywhere in between. Stay tuned for more news and updates on the event in the coming weeks and see my previous post more background on the event and the online video industry.

The Online Video Platform Summit Returns, This Time in L.A., November 2 - 3, 2010

The Online Video Platform Summit returns for a second year as a featured event at Streaming Media West, scheduled November 2 - 3, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Los Angeles, CA. The Summit a two-day event designed for video publishers of all types and sizes, whether small businesses looking to publish content for the first time, independent entertainment content creators, large media organizations, or anywhere in between. Attendees will learn about the components they need and the value that online video platforms can bring to their company or organization to better publish, distribute, and monetize online video content.

As I wrote months ago, over 30 companies in the online video platform category participated in the inaugural event, as either speakers, event sponsors or exhibitors, and many others came to see what was going on. We had attendees from all over the U.S. and international attendees that came from as far away as Argentina, Brazil, Calgary, Japan, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Norway. The online video platform space has evolved over a short time and has moved up to the applications layer of the stack with all-in-one solutions.

With more than 80 platforms to choose from, there has been some fierce and friendly competition. We've seen some interesting developments in the space over the last year in terms of M&As, with Google acquiring Episodic, KIT digital acquiring Multicast Media and most recently, Limelight Networks buying Delve Networks and Cisco buying ExtendMedia. We also saw the entire industry gear up for the release of the iPad and the coming mobile video explosion, and many roll out TV Everywhere solutions as paid content becomes more of a reality.

FierceOnlineVideo's Jim O'Neil recently noted that, the online video industry continues to strengthen, and one of the bright spots was detailed in a report by eMarketer that forecasts a $1.5 billion market by 2014. According to eMarketer, "147.5 million people in the U.S. will "watch some form of video content" at least monthly." That forecast is likely to ring true as the new war for the Internet-enabled living room heats up with the great number of offerings available today, and in the future.

As many predicted, 2010 would be an eventful year for the online video space. Now, with the fall season fully in gear and the Online Video Platform Summit is just two months away, I'm pleased to announce that I'll be working again with Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen, program co-chair (and editor of StreamingMedia.com and OnlineVideo.net) on the event. Eric and I will be selecting speakers and moderators for each of the sessions over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for more details.

Eric had this to say about the Summit:
"At StreamingMedia.com and OnlineVideo.net, we still get inquiries daily from companies looking for advice on maximizing their online video strategy, and the answer almost always comes down to examining what's available from the various online video platforms. In the year since our first Online Video Platform Summit, we've seen the various platforms differentiate themselves further, with clear leaders appearing within certain needs, such as analytics or video SEO. The market of available solutions is as vital as ever--maybe even more than it was last year--and this year's OVPS will be another great opportunity for attendees to find out not only what platforms are offering, but how to get the most out of their online video, no matter what platform they're using."
Registration is open for both the Online Video Platform Summit and Streaming Media West and all Streaming Media West keynotes are free to attend for both OVP Summit attendees and the exhibition only attendees. If you're interested in being a sponsor, contact joel@streamingmedia.com or download the Online Video Platform Summit Sponsorship Brochure.

Here's the schedule so far...

Streaming Media West and Online Video Platform Summit - Special Edition News Round Up

It was a busy news week with major announcements from companies participating in Streaming Media West and the Online Video Platform Summit. This year, Fox Business News was on site on the exhibit floor right next to the TV Worldwide booth with live news updates throughout the week. While the numbers are not yet in, the conference sessions, exhibit hall and Red Carpet interviews all saw a great deal of traffic and even on day three attendance was still high. Hashtags #smwest09 and #ovps09 saw a lot of action with live Tweets from the keynote, conference sessions and social events that highlighted a groundswell of mainstream attention on our nascent space.

The Online Video Platform was a new event that was held in conjunction with Streaming Media West. Over 30 companies in the online video platform category participated in the show as either speakers, event sponsors or exhibitors, and many others came to see what was going on. We had attendees from all over the U.S. and international attendees they came from as far away as Argentina, Brazil, Calgary, Japan, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Norway. The OVP space has evolved over a short time and has moved up the stack as a SaaS (software as a service) offering eclipsing CDNs, which just a few months ago saw their own summit at Streaming Media East. Ben Homer, who I was glad to finally to meet at the show, pointed this out in his post, SMW Closing Thoughts | Online Video Watch,
"CDNs were noticeably missing from the event floor. There were a few, Internap was there, but Neither Akamai or Limelight had a booth this year. Several years ago CDNs were everywhere you looked at Streaming Media shows. Now it’s platforms."
Streaming Media publisher Joel Unickow, launched an Online Video Platforms Group on LinkedIn several months ago and in a related discussion he asked,
"Is control going from CDNs to OVPs? Over the past 18 months, I've seen Online Video Platform companies come out of the woodwork, like termites out of a log. With Could Services for Transcoding getting more attention, it's interesting to see how end users are no longer so much concerned (or even know) which CDN content is streaming on, but more-so about the 'easability' of getting video online, up and running with bells and whistles. Now, don't get me wrong, CDN's are the core component of the Ecosystem, but my question is - does that matter anymore ?"
With so many platforms in the market, many agreed that there are too many to be sustainable. There will be compression in the space with major changes likely in the next 12-24 months. The emphasis of the Streaming Media West show seems to be moving away from CDN companies that deliver the bits, to the applications layer of the stack with an all-in-one solution offered by OVPs. The annual show focused on the business and technology of online video has been held in San Jose for years, moves to Los Angeles next year. Many have commented that with show closer to Hollywood it will bring in more of the web television and industry.

It's an exciting time to be involved in online video and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. Now, onto the news and related updates in this special edition Streaming Media West and Online Video Platform Summit News Roundup. Look for upcoming analysis, interviews, videos, photos and more over the next few weeks. Videos of all the sessions and Red Carpet interviews will be available on Streaming Media TV, but many of the sessions, demos and interviews can be seen right now on TV Worldwide's Streaming Media West 2009 webcast archives.

To help kick things off, here's an interview with Dan Rayburn, Conference Chair and EVP, StreamingMedia.com, who spoke with Beet.TV about the growth of broadband enabled devices and the online video ecosystem.

Beet.TV: Streaming Media West Download: Broadband-Enabled Devices are Big
SAN JOSE, CA -- Streaming Media West, the annual industry gathering of broadband executives, drew a bigger crowd this year then last and the focus has changed from delivery and distribution to devices and content, says Dan Rayburn, head of the show. We caught up with Dan on Wednesday afternoon for a rundown on the show and industry trends.

May the Source Be With You... The 2010 Streaming Media Industry Sourcebook Exclusive Interview

Every year since 2003, Information Today, Inc. (ITI) has published the Streaming Media Industry Sourcebook, an annual publication for technology managers and executive decision makers who are implementing rich media within their organizations. The Sourcebook, first appeared in print in December 2003, blends a comprehensive directory of solution provider companies with highly practical articles on choosing, installing, and justifying a streaming initiative. It's also Streaming Media's annual double issue and is a yearly review and look ahead at the year to come.

Streaming Media magazine Editor Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen announced the 2010 Streaming Media Industry Sourcebook today and offered a glimpse of the contents of the publication:
"The Year in Review and Futurewatch sections will look back and ahead, respectively, at the enterprise, entertainment, and education verticals as well as at mobile video, content delivery, advertising, and video to the living room. We'll also feature buyers guides aimed at helping you make smart purchasing choices for online video platforms, encoding solutions, enterprise video solutions, and video formats and players. On the how-to front, we'll take a look at deploying a DRM solution, encoding for multiple devices, and optimizing video search engine optimization, among other topics. We'll also announce our annual Editors' Picks—our writers' choices for the best products and services of 2009"

Eric also included this exclusive video interview with a special Streaming Media magazine subscriber who had an interesting perspective on "The Revenge of Online Video."
