Have You Taken the 2010 Video Marketing Quiz? EyeView Tests Your Video Marketing Skills

According to EyeView, an effective video experience is the best way to increase conversion. Since it was founded in 2007, the Tel Aviv-based company has specialized in online video content creation, marketing and conversion as B2B solution for big name customers that include Google, Yahoo!, HP, and eBay. They've learned a lot about how video performs as marketing tool, and decided to share the data in a fun way using social media. This past week, EyeView launched its 2010 Video Marketing Quiz which follows up on the success of last years quiz, which you can still take here, and showcases some of the results of optimization tests that EyeView has performed for its clients.

VMQ10

The quiz is composed of five questions that challenges your video marketing instincts. Each question compares two videos side-by-side and asks you to choose which one had a higher conversion rate.
  1. Still image vs. video
  2. Dynamic Call-to-Action pointers
  3. Launch triggers
  4. Auto-play vs. Press-to-play
  5. British accent vs. American accent
All comparison data was collected during A/B tests where 50 percent of the incoming traffic would see one version of the page and the remaining 50 percent would see an alternative version. In each case EyeView's customers saw the conversion rate for particular landing pages increase by as much as 85 percent. The question that pitted two videos with voice-overs by British and American accents, was a way to discover whether the old adage about everything sounding smarter in an English accent translated into increased conversions – and the results were surprising.

According to Tal Riesenfeld, Co-Founder and VP Marketing for EyeView:
“The quiz is a fun way to expose marketers to the proven concept that video solutions increase conversion and generate greater profits. Etailers have already woken up to this idea with early adopters like Zappos.com committing resources to video, but we are also seeing companies from the financial, software, lead generation and gaming sectors benefiting from the improved performance video offers.”
Daniel Sevitt, EyeView’s Director of Corporate Communications, told me that people really love the quiz and while they're a B2B company, they love using social media to connect with peers and consumers. EyeView’s previous Video Marketing Quiz included a book giveaway of Chris Brogan's New York Times bestseller, Trust Agents, and EyeView returned to the microblogging network again for their 2010 quiz. Everyone who completes the quiz is invited to tweet their results with a simple in-game link. The quiz launched at 10 am ET on Wednesday May 10, 2010, and EyeView randomly gave away five Amazon.com vouchers ($20 each) every hour for the first eight hours to anyone tweeting their score and helping spread the word about the quiz.

You can also download the answer key once you've completed the quiz to see how well you scored.

[Disclaimer: I actually won a $20 voucher after Tweeting my score, but I have no financial interests in EyeView, nor is this a sponsored post.]

Web Video Pick of the Week: The Web.Files Episode #14 Tim Street

One of my favorite new online video shows is The Web.Files, a weekly entertainment talk show that exclusively covers the "web celebs” involved in creating the best, most-watched, highest-rated, and most talked about series on the web. Launched this past July 2009, The Web.Files is created and hosted by the lovely and talented entertainment reporter and media host Kristyn Burtt and produced and directed by Sandra J Payne. The Web.Files is uploaded on Wednesdays to Blip.TV, where it is featured as a hot series on the front page each week and has racked up tens of thousands of views.

The idea for the show began during Kristyn Burtt's red carpet coverage of the March 28, 2009, Streamy Awards. Burtt found that the people she was talking with that night had fascinating stories to tell and that she’d like to be the one to help tell those stories to the world through a weekly talk/interview show. Burtt then contacted award-winning filmmaker, Sandra J. Payne, whose SPwrite Productions, LLC, was about to launch its first web series, “Life with Kat & McKay” on its new portal, PurseDog. The two decided to join forces to produce the The Web.Files and have profiled more than a dozen "web celebs" including Marc Ostrick, co-founder of eGuiders, comedy duo Dave and Tom creators of Safety Geeks: SVI, YouTube star Tay Zonday and many others.

In this episode, Kristyn Burtt, speaks with veteran new media guru Tim Street, Chief Creative/CEO of Ape Digital, blogger at 1TimStreet.com and creator of French Maid TV, among many other ventures. Tim began his focus on web entertainment in 1999 and is one of the pioneers in the web series field. He has attained respect for his business model in the web video world as one of the few series producers to figure out how to monetize online video through sponsored entertainment. Tim recently produced a free eBook, 10 Things You Should Do Before You Upload Your Online Video, and regularly shares his insights on how to be effective online on his blog and at industry conferences and web television events. He'll be a featured speaker this next week at Blog World Expo in Las Vegas, October 15-17, 2009. This video offers a rare view of the man behind the sunglasses in a candid and insightful conversation.

On her blog Red Carpet Closet, Kristyn said,
"I really hope that web series producers and those interested in the new media industry listen carefully to what Tim has to say in the interview. He has a lot of valuable information to share and with his new e-Book on the way, you will get a Top 10 of things to do and not do before you upload your first web series. So many of us have jumped into the web world in the last 2-3 years. Can you imagine creating something for the Internet in 1999? Well, that is exactly what Tim did. He knows what he is doing and he was doing it way before any of us knew that you could tell stories via the web."

Nalts Named Chief Strategy Officer for Hitviews

Within a week of announcing that he had left his corporate marketing job in the pharmaceutical industry, Viral Video Genius Kevin "Nalty" Nalts has landed a new gig as Chief Strategy Officer of HITVIEWS, an online entertainment studio featuring a wide roster of talented web celebrities that produces viral marketing videos for agencies and brands. Hitviews
harkens back to the early days of the Hollywood studios by marrying web stars with brands and marketing campaigns. Hitviews' growing stable of stars have a cumulative view count of over 400 million – and a base of over 1 million "fan" subscribers according to their site. Nalts has been associated with Hitviews since its launch last year.

"These video stars are creating content regularly," says Hitviews co-founder and CEO Walter Sabo. "It's not just user-generated videos. These are video performers who have a large following and who understand how to get people engaged and to respond. Rather than attaching pre-roll, billboards, product placement and interruptive commercials, our video stars organically build videos around a marketer's message. Products are presented in ways that are organic – part of the video."

Hitviews launched in November 2008 under the guidance of  20-year old Australian Caitlin Hill, who is a co-founder and serves as Chief Creative Officer and is one of the most popular video stars on YouTube producing under the name TheHill88. Hitsview is backed by  entertainment industry leaders Robert Weinstein of The Weinstein Company, Slaight Communications' Chairman Gary Slaight, cable news entrepreneur Reese Schoenfeld, former ABC Radio executive Allen Shaw and Sabo, who was former head of ABC and NBC radio.

According to Jack Myers of The Huffington Post, "Hitviews offers marketers and agencies one stop shoppinghandling creative, video production, editing, music scoring, rights management, and distribution wherever the brand wants. But, Sabo adds, the brand has full control and approval before videos are distributed."

In his new role as Chief Strategy Officer Nalts will be responsible for continuing Hitviews' aggressive entry into the marketplace. Sales tactics, marketing rollouts, public relations and industry relations will be his responsibility.

"Listening to Kevin Nalty talk about the power of online video marketing is inspiring to our clients and prospective clients," says Sabo. "He has extraordinary marketing experience at the highest corporate levels working for the most demanding clients. Hitviews is very lucky to have his leadership."

As Nalts embarks on his new role at Hitviews and develops his social media consulting strategy he spoke with Jim Edwards of BNET Pharma Blog about social media marketing and had this to say, "Almost every major brand has a desire to move from traditional online and offline media, and engage in the conversation already taking place. The smart brands are engaging expert liaisons to help them be invited guests rather than annoying salespeople, and there are a load of amateurs with large audiences that can help. I’m focusing on the industries that are already serious about this medium — entertainment, consumer-product goods, and travel — rather than pharmaceutical. However as pharma gets serious about social media and video marketing, it’s a natural fit."

Visit the Hitviews website for more information, or call 877-HITVIEWS.

Traditional Media in Transition Features For Your Imagination CEO Paul Kontonis on Web Video Distribution Strategies

Leading online digital media studio For Your Imagination develops, packages and distributes high-quality original Internet TV and web video series. The New York-based studio works with brands and content creators to develop their online video content, offering them the opportunity to reach a targeted, advertiser-friendly audience.

I recently spoke with CEO Paul Kontonis about FYI's sponsorship deal with Warner Brothers to promote the 'Watchmen' movie on their Axis of Comedy network. The promotional campaign was both unique and groundbreaking for the digital media and the two-part interview with Paul is here and here.

The media industry web series, Traditional Media in Transition, has a new episode featuring Paul who speaks more about the promotional campaign which provided narrative integration of a Watchmen-themed storyline through four programs within For Your Imagination's video network, including an original Kyle Piccolo Comic Shop Therapist mini-web series. Paul goes on to discuss challenges facing the new media industry along with some progressive strategies to address them.

"The ability to distribute your content anywhere on the web is one of the promises of web video." Paul says, "Just because it's out there doesn't mean it's going to be seen. You really have to become part of the conversation that your content lives in and you have to be able to engage your audience."

For Your Imagination's four principles of their distribution strategy:
  1. Building a robust destination site
  2. Finding the communities out there to tap into that support video
  3. Reaching out to top influencers, the real fans
  4. Going deeper into the vertical to build relationships with sites to carry the content
Visit For Your Imagination's web site for more on their web video capabilities.

TMIT is produced by Zoom In Online (ZIO), an award winning online video network, covering the best in pop-culture, providing visitors with the latest happenings in arts, entertainment, culture and technology with four online communities: Film & TV, Music, Photography and Design. The End is Near, Kyle Piccolo Watchmen Miniseries Episode 3 of 3

With March 6 almost upon the east coast the midnight of showing of the WATCHMEN movie is little more than an hour away. I know many fans who have their tickets for the midnight movie are waiting with anticipation for the highly acclaimed graphic novel to come to life on the big screen.

Just in time for the opening, here's the third of a three-episode WATCHMEN miniseries! Note the added affect to the Innovid player to help you find the hidden easter eggs.

Episode description: The end is here and it is explosive! Kyle and Doucheus face the third and final visitor - will they survive the experience? This episode is sponsored by WATCHMEN - http://www.watchmenmovie.com - and in honor of the movie release, we've peppered this episode with a bunch of Watchmen references - can you find them all?

Follow these links to watch "3 6 9 - Part One" and "3 6 9 - Part Two", and get the latest Kyle Piccolo news and more videos at http://www.kylepiccolo.com

See HungrymanTV's Phistophicles for his Watchmen tie-in episode, Comic Book 8 as Phistophicles sells his soul in the name of branded content and viral marketing (which interestingly enough didn’t even exist in ancient Greece!) as he not-so-cleverly shills for the movie, “Watchmen.”

Watchmen Movie Review, My First Impressions Following the Advance Screening

I was pleased to offer the exclusive limited ticket giveaway to my blog readers for the advance screening of the WATCHMEN movie in San Francisco on Monday, March 2. For those of you who were the lucky few, I was glad to see some of you there and to those of you I didn't see I hope you had a good time. As faithful comic book fans my friend Jason and I were not disappointed as we recorded our first impressions of the movie following the advance screening without any spoilers. Director Zack Snyder delivered a dark, gritty, and violent adaptation which stayed true to the core story details of the original comic book. It's R-rating is appropriate with the vivid portrayal of violence and sexual content.

Google news has close to 800 related stories for "Watchmen review" with many critics offering sobering critiques rather than gushing praise. Some fans suggesting that the international reviews have been positive, and that an overwhelming majority of U.S. reviews have been negative. Comicbook.com wrote that the movie doesn't live up to the trailer citing negative criticsm from Hollywood Reporter, Variety who predict that once the core fan base sees it that the box office numbers will drop. But to balance that there was positive feedback from other sites like Ain’t It Cool News, Comic Book Resources and Newsarama. However, following the success of Dark Knight (partly fueled by Heath Ledger's untimely demise) and Iron Man, the viral marketing campaign on television and the web and the overall popularity of the comic book film genre this may be the first blockbuster action movie of the year. Or it may be a big flop at box office. We'll know more after a few weeks.

Watchmen opens in theaters on Friday, March 6.

For Your Imagination Watchmen Movie Campaign is Unique and Groundbreaking for Web Video

This is part two of my interview with Paul Kontonis, CEO and Co-Founder of For Your Imagination, about their sponsorship by Warner Brothers Theatrical for the upcoming "Watchmen" movie and their promotional campaign that is both unique and groundbreaking for the digital media studio. In part one of the interview, Paul discussed how the sponsorship program funded a package of original comedy and entertainment shows that crosses over through four of their Axis of Comedy network web series, Kyle Piccolo Comic Shop Therapist, The Retributioners, Abigail's X-Rated Teen Diary and HungrymanTV's Phistophicles. The campaign launched last week with a brand new "Watchmen"-themed episode of Kyle Piccolo and continues tomorrow with a scheduled for release of new episodes from all the other web series.

Larry Kless: How did this Watchmen sponsorship deal come together?

Paul Kontonis: We have had the opportunity to work on a few projects promoting Warner Bros movies. We did “Dark Knight” which kicked off Kyle Piccolo and before that were involved in the “Get Smart” UGC video contest. So that's how we started kicking off this whole video thing.

“Dark Knight” was kind of a test run basically utilizing our video ad inventory, trailers and title cards, and this campaign is the next step, which is the development and production of original content that has Watchmen-themed elements within it.

Then we took it to the next level by making them clickable with the Easter eggs embedded in them and right now we're seeing click through rates of almost 70% when people are watching the interactive versions and that is absolutely fantastic. With regards to the agency, we have worked with them on a few projects as well.

LK: Have you used the Innovid player before on any other projects?

PK: No. This is our first application of the Innovid player, our first opportunity to work with the team and we are amazingly impressed. They were added-on after the plans had actually been signed and once we started talking to them, they had even less time to come on board for the project. What really impressed me and what wanted me to get started is the abilities of the player to work like an ad server in that it adjusts to the viewer.

If you watched the video once and you go to watch it again, it sees your IP address again and it will serve you different interactive elements within the video. In a couple of cases there's grafitti on the wall and when you watch it once, it might be one thing and when you watch it a second time, it will be something else. So instead of rendering a completely new video, on the fly we’re adding in this layer of interactivity that makes it even more interesting in a subtle way.

We chose for a very subtle implementation of it versus something very obvious saying "click me." Even though it's subtle, it's something that this community, the core fans, dig. It's fun -- find little elements in it and be happy about them or angry about them. That's part of this comic book culture; you like it or you don't or you rant about it, but either way, you comment on it. We definitely had a lot of response from it -- mostly positive, which is outstanding.

LK: It really lends itself to the same model as using Easter eggs in the DVD experience. Having an interactive, more personal experience with the content.

PK: And if you don't know they're there, no big deal. It's a regular video viewing experience. If you know they're there and you start looking for them, I think there's 7 or 8 placements in the video -- a couple of them are really hard to find.

It's not that they're small… it's that they blend in so well and if you're not paying attention, they're hard to find. It gives an experience for the people who are really excited about them; an experience for the person that really doesn't know that they’re there, and the Watchmen references.

What we're started to see now is that there's all these contests springing up on the web on sites like “Starpulse,” “MovieFlick,” “Movieweb” and these are sites that have millions of unique visitors a month. They’re doing home page promotions where if you find all the references in the videos, you can win all this free merchandise. And we can’t wait to see how people are going to be filling those competitions out because they're hard. There are 15 references in this video alone and some of them are tough.

LK: In terms of branded entertainment and product placement for the promotional campaign, does it have a finite life until once the movie opens? How long will the promotion go?

PK: The videos will stay up forever --we're not going to pull them down. The interactive elements, the pre-rolls, overlays will disappear after March 8th. The title cards will probably stay in the videos so we will always know that this was sponsored by the Watchmen campaign. The thematic content and integrated storylines will stay there for the life of the videos.

If you clicked on any of the Easter eggs you'll see it takes you to the “TheNewFrontiersman.” That site is 100% Watchmen-related. It's an offshoot of the movie. That content and what we wanted to do was not necessarily extend the movie like that, but introduce people to the movie in another kind of entertaining way.

I think it's pretty unique that they were willing to do this and take it seriously. This medium is definitely starting to look like a real viable option.

Watchmen opens in theaters on March 6, 2009.
Stay tuned for details on a special Watchmen movie promotion for readers of this blog.

For Your Imagination Integrates Axis of Comedy Web Series Crossovers in Warner Brothers Sponsored Watchmen Movie Promotion

Through a sponsorship by Warner Brothers Theatrical for its upcoming “Watchmen" movie, New York-based online media studio For Your Imagination has created a custom package of comedy and entertainment shows produced under FYI’s Axis of Comedy video network. Clever "Watchmen”-themed tie-ins and crossovers between four of their comedy web series through an integrated storyline defines their innovative approach to the promotional campaign which launched on February 18, 2009 and runs through March 6, 2009, the opening date of “Watchmen”.

All programming will be available on www.axisofcomedy.tv utilizing a customized interactive video player by Innovid that includes clickable Easter eggs and “Watchmen” references as part of a fan contest. Videos will be syndicated across For Your Imagination’s distribution network of video sharing platforms such as Blip, DailyMotion, MySpace, Yahoo! and Viddler, entertainment and comic book websites and as a podcast on iTunes.

I had the opportunity to speak with Paul Kontonis, CEO and Co-Founder of For Your Imagination about the Warner Brothers sponsorship and their unique campaign in the following interview. This is part one of a two-part conversation with Paul.

Larry Kless: It's certainly a great way to kick off the new year with this Warner Brothers sponsorship deal. How is FYI approaching the "Watchmen" promotional campaign?

Paul Kontonis: It's been a good strong start of the year with a nice mix of brand entertainment and original sponsored entertainment. The Watchmen is a sponsorship of current web series, Kyle Piccolo being one of them and three other series, The Retributioners, Abigail's X-Rated Teen Diary and HungrymanTV's Phistophicles, and the sponsorship is original videos within those four web series with the purpose being, and the reason those four were selected is the three series.

The Retributioners, Abigail’s X-Rated Teen Diary and Phistophicles are very popular with mainstream audiences, adults 18-34 and not necessarily comic book focus. Kyle Piccolo's audience is a subset of the mainstream audience. They have much more of a comic book bent to them and they're the ones who are rabid and excited about the upcoming “Watchmen” movie.

Kyle Piccolo also has the benefit of having of an ability to talk to a mainstream audience without setting them totally astray. The purpose of the whole campaign is to take these three original web series that are mainstream ones and use them as a way of delivering the masses into the comic book airlock that is Kyle Piccolo and then bringing them to Watchmen.

This campaign right now looks pretty straightforward. You saw a video for Kyle Piccolo that has “Watchmen” tie-ins. Another one's going to come out and it's going to have “Watchmen” tie-ins and it's part of a mini-series called "3 6 9" and it's about the mystery of 3 6 9. 03.06.09 is the launch date of the movie but Kyle and Doucheus don't know that.

Now when you see the videos next week from the other web series. They have crossovers into the Kyle Piccolo world and what they're meant to do is to take you from The Retributioners’ world into Kyle Piccolo into the Watchmen.

So for somebody who sees the Watchmen right away and get turned off because it's all superheroes, they'll get slowly introduced to it and acclimated to the storyline by going first from The Retributioners into Kyle Piccolo. Then if they're really interested, then they'll make the next jump.

So instead of making it a big leap, we made it two small jumps. We think this will be a great way of getting the masses to come to Watchmen while still exciting the base because Kyle Piccolo excites the base. What's cool about it is the videos are done from different point of views, so in The Retributioners’ video Kyle Piccolo exists in that world. So Stephanie who is in The Retributioners is in the same world as Kyle Piccolo himself; in fact you're going to see her in one of the Kyle Piccolo videos. So she crosses over even in that way.

In “Abigail”, Kyle Piccolo is media. It is a show you can watch. It is a web site you can go to. So it's as though Abigail is in our world and Kyle is just as he is in our world It is a web series you can go see.

And in "Phistophicles", it's done even more insidiously and Kyle is almost a fellow philosopher. They're almost peers since Phistophicles in the video is from 3000 years ago. So it's really unclear who Kyle is --- there’s kind of a mystery about how old Kyle is; is he really an older soul, so it kind of gives it a little bit of a legend to it. So we came it from all different angles assuming that most people wouldn't see the connection. “Abigail” has its own fan base; "The Retributioners" has its own fan base, and all of the series have their own fan base. They share some commonality because they're all on “Axis of Comedy” but they really have their own unique points of distribution that will channel their own grouping of that 18-34 audience into a funnel that will take them right to “Watchmen.”

LK: So for everyone on the shows, Stephanie, all the cast of Kyle, etc, How have they responded to the campaign?

PK: They're excited… it's a lot of fun. What was really fun about it was they got to do their own video with some elements of the campaign in it, but it's their own content that they can distribute across their sites out to their fans. They're done in such a way that their fans will like the content and not be, "what is this? A promotion video for the movie?" No, it will be like another video of Abigail or Phistophicles but it has these elements in it that pique your interest and give you the opportunity to explore more. So they were very happy about that, plus there's going to be a lot of distribution and a lot of points of syndication, as part of this campaign across a lot of comic book sites, movie web sites and entertainment web sites that will really increase the exposure of all these web series and really help build their audiences out, as well.

LK: I'm a comic book collector from way back and your approach reminds me the big comic crossovers they do every year (at Marvel and DC) and you have to get all the issues to get the whole story. From an editorial standpoint, how did you work with all the writers on developing the continuity of the storylines and how quickly did it come together?

PK: Hats off to Alec Pollak who is our Chief Creative Officer and he's also one of the co-creators and writers of Kyle Piccolo. He's the one who really spearheaded the integration and the crossing over to the other shows and he worked with each of the writers and helped them with the script ideas and the concepts. We had to run things by Warner Bros for approval to make sure they were okay with how we were using the Watchmen brand and we didn't have a lot of time to do it. The concepts came together in under a week and then we had to jump right into production. We only got approval for this in early February and we didn't get the g- ahead until the first week of February. It launched on the 16th and there will be four new videos out this next week. Each of the other web series plus another episode of Kyle. So as it was coming together, we knew we were going to be doing this, but we had to wait for approval.

LK: I just started following Alec on Twitter and I saw one Tweet saying “On set at Midtown Comics. New KP soon."

PK: We just shot the second one Wednesday (2/11/09) and just got the rough cut together yesterday and ran it by approval to Warner Bros for approval. We're hoping to get it approved as early as possible and once that's done, we'll shoot the last one one Wednesday (2/26/09) night. We're really excited about a possible surprise for the third episode, which we can't yet reveal. Stay tuned…

End of Part One of the interview. Read more tomorrow in Part Two.

The Picture Production Company Creates Online Viral Marketing for the Watchmen Movie with The New Frontiersman.net

TheNewFrontiersman.net is part of the online viral marketing campaign for the upcoming Watchmen movie inspired by the right-wing extremist publication read by the main character Rorschach in the original graphic novel. It was launched in early January and I previously wrote about how the web site extends the narrative of the film through transmedia storytelling into highly populated social media sites like Twitter, Friendfeed, YouTube, Flickr and Digg. Documents, photos and videos are all aggregated on the web site uncover evidence in both the public and secret history of the Watchmen.

A number of the blogs had suggested that the Warner Brothers team behind The Dark Knight was driving the campaign, but the web site is being spearheaded by Dan Light, head of interactive at The Picture Production Company, for Paramount which is distributing the film internationally, outside the U.S. But that hasn't stopped it from getting plenty of attention from U.S. blogs and sites. Anthony Ha of Venturebeat spoke to Light who said, “I can’t think of another campaign that makes such economic use of these tools in such a cleanly integrated way.” Ha had noted that Facebook was omitted from the list of sites, which nowadays, seems like it would be the epicenter of any viral marketing campaign. However Light noted that, "Our implementation of Twitter and Friendfeed is very lean. We've kept it simple, and used the right tools for the right jobs."

The interest has been overwhelming with fans, both old and new, commenting on and engaging with the content. The PPC blog noted that the first video, an excerpt from a 1970 newsreel looking back on 10 years of Dr. Manhattan had been viewed 125,000 times within the first 24 hours and currently has 447,992 views. Flickr views and Twitter followers are growing as well and they were also excited to be featured on Epic FU. PPC Interactive had been pitching ideas for the movie five years ago were also thrilled that most of their original ideas are seeing the light of day.

Here are two more new videos from their promotional campaign.

For Your Imagination Inks Six-Figure Sponsorship Deal With Warner Brothers To Promote 'Watchmen' Movie on Axis of Comedy Network

Over the last few days digital media studio For Your Imagination has been quietly rolling out a promotional campaign of the theatrical release of the Warner Brothers film, WATCHMEN, on its Axis of Comedy network. Signs of the "takeover" as FYI CEO Paul Kontonis called it started the other day with banner ads on the participating Axis of Comedy web series sites - Abigail’s Teen Diary, The Retributioners, Kyle Piccolo: Comic Shop Therapist and HungrymanTV’s Phistophicles.

Probably one of the anticipated comic book movies of all time since for years it was one that Watchmen creator Alan Moore said for years that it never would be done. But on March 6th the film opens worldwide and the viral marketing campaign is in full gear with TV commercials, film inspired social media sites, Twitter updates, iPhone apps and now comic book inspired webisodes brought to you by FYI in the form of Kyle Piccolo: Comic Ship Therapist.

If you haven't heard of Kyle Piccolo he's the man behind the counter, like the Simpons Comic Book Guy, Kyle is always sardonic, sometimes empathetic, and not quite all-knowing Comic Shop Therapist. Kyle, played by Eric Zuckerman, possesses the uncanny ability to find the answer to your problem in the pages of a comic book and you can bet he’ll do it in a smart, entertaining and, more often than not, hilarious way.

Tubefilter News reported today that FYI inked a 6-figure sponsorship deal with Warner Bros Theatrical which said Marc Hustvedt, "The funding makes way for three new episodes of Kyle Piccolo, which has been known to integrate comic movies directly into the storylines before (see the series’ Dark Knight deal last summer). The three new episodes will be dubbed “3 6 9,” the first one officially premieres tomorrow and will be littered with hidden Watchmen references for eager fans of the film. The new videos on axisofcomedy.tv and kylepiccolo.com will be utilizing a customized interactive video player built by Innovid and will include in-video clickable easter eggs."

Continuing reading the story on Tubefilter here.

Here's the new episode, which Kyle helps one mysterious customer to better understand Pirates vs. Ninjas and himself. This is the first of three episodes that will be part of the promotion which runs through March 8, all embedded with cryptic Watchmen references and mentions. Look for hidden Easter eggs that you can click on that change when you watch the video again.

Hulu Reveals Its Secret, An Evil Plot to Destroy The World. Enjoy.

I think everyone in the online video world who was watching the Super Bowl XLIII were keeping an eye out for this ad. My friend Reed Kavner wrote on his blog Hulu Introduces Itself to the Mainstream – Cancel Your Cable, "This is more exciting than most Super Bowl ads because it reveals something about where NBC sees themselves heading. NBC is airing the big game this year and is also the co-owner of Hulu (along with News Corp). As we all know, buying ad time during the Super Bowl ain’t like buying time on a parking meter. But apparently NBC sees some benefit in forgoing the several million dollars they could demand from an outside advertiser to promote their new platform (irony alert!)"

During the game on Twitter Huludotcom sent this message, "Keep watching. The secret behind Hulu will be revealed during the 2nd half of the Super Bowl." In case you missed it I've embedded it below.

Hulu also created this embeddable Super Bowl Ads widget also embedded below. Fans will be able to view them on Web sites NBC.com, Hulu.com and SuperBowl.com. Hulu will allow users to vote on their favorite ad and the winner will be announced Feb. 3.

Watch the Watchmen Get Social Through Transmedia Storytelling

Watchmen is considered one of the greatest comic book stories of all-time. Published as a 12-part maxi-series by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987 it's still hailed as a masterpiece of sequential storytelling. Now finally after years of attempts to adapt the series into a feature film comic geeks prayers have been answered as it makes its big screen debut on March 3, 2009.

Writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins created a world layered with the grime of deceit and dirty little secrets of the tortured lives of has-been superheroes. In a George Orwellian landscape the story unfolds as a murder mystery and delves into the gray areas of what made these characters choose the lives they've led, what brought them together and what broke them apart.

Now, with the upcoming Watchmen movie release, elements of transmedia storytelling has surfaced this past week in the form of THE NEW FRONTIERSMAN, a new web site with chronological blog entries featuring photographic evidence, documents, and videos presented as breaking news. Each blog entry uncovers evidence of the the existence of the governmental program that created the super-powered being known as Manhattan as seen in the this video below.

1Tim Street asked, "Does Hollywood Get Social Media? Have you seen any Social Media Marketing campaigns from Hollywood studios that you think were successes?" Tim shared the video above in his post which inspired me to write this post because I think these Hollywood producers and marketers do get it. As part of a viral marketing campaign to promote the movie, The New Frontiersman is getting social on Twitter, Friendfeed, YouTube, Flickr and Digg and has created the Watchmen widget below to share on Watchmen fan sites.

As with each of the social networks The New Frontiersman is sharing updates on each of these networks allowing for comments and conversation. While this online marketing effort is not at a level of LG15 Universe, which incorporates social media audience participation into the storyline, it's still an interesting application of transmedia storytelling by using our current social media networks to extend the narrative across mediums.
